This is an AmigaOS4 version of WordNet - a large electronic database of the English language developed at the Cognitive Science Laboratory, Princeton University. It contains more than 155 thousand words and phrases that are semantically tagged and interlinked to form an intricate, hierarchical network of word meanings. This network can be walked through using a native OS4 browser written by Daniel Jedlicka. Being more than just a dictionary, it is an indispensable tool for translators, English learners, English teachers, linguists, copywriters, etc. The AmigaOS4 WordNet distribution provides the following extra features: - a comfortable ReAction-based browser - ARexx interface - application.library support - speech output through the Flite synthesis engine - extensive help and documentation SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS - a computer running AmigaOS 4.x (Kickstart V52+) - AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3 is recommended - about 30 MB of free disk space - flite.device (for speech output - available separately from OS4depot.net) Note: the program has not been tested under AmigaOS 4.0. INSTALLATION Use the installation script provided with the distribution archive. An existing installation of WordNet will be updated, preserving the program's settings file. If you want to use the speech output, make sure you also download flite.device from OS4depot.net and install it in DEVS: For more information, read the AmigaGuide documentation inside the archive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NOTES WordNet 3.5 (8.1.2013) This is a recommended update. - NEW: Database files updated to the latest Princeton release, adding about 180 new words and phrases. The databases now also take up less disk space. - NEW: WordNet's Application Library interface now supports custom messages. Any registered application can send a message containing a word or a piece of text, and WordNet will try to look it up. This provides yet another way of external control, as well as an alternative to using the ARexx interface. - NEW: Installer script. - NEW: Program- and drawer icon by Thomas Blatt. - UPDATE: Improved AmigaGuide help system. The documentation file now opens asynchronously and no longer blocks the program window. Pressing the Help key while in the Preferences window now opens the relevant chapter of the doc file. For a complete history, see the "Release notes" section of the AmigaGuide manual. |
