The up down axis seems to be off to the left by 45 degrees. You have to move the mouse diagonally for up and down!? Any ideas? The Textures are some kind of bleached, most of the Part of them is white.

I get a requester for gfx.wad (which doesn't seem to be on my Quake CD) at which point the game quits. Where can I find this .wad file?

Yes Quake starts but the mouse control is wrong and in the shell output it complains of being incompatible.

Helgis, your advice is plain wrong. The system always looks in sobjs: for files by default. What you suggest will make a mess.

It would be very helpful if there was a description of what makes "fuhquake" different from the other ports of Quake. i.e. Why should I bother downloading & trying it out? For example, does it use hardware rendering?

There is an own section of SOBjs site if you find the button. But a SOBjs drawer with files needed for the game should always be included. My best tip is for you to copy the SOBjs drawer from your SYS and copy that drawer to where you have the game. Good luck and Merry Christmas :-)

I appear to be missing a shared object libpng14.so.14. Any ideas where to retrieve it.
