Short: Woof! - MBF-based Doom source port
Uploader: Falke_34
Author: Fabian Greffrath and the Woof! contributors, AmigaOS4 port by
Falke_34
Type: game/fps
Version: 16.0.0
Requires: SDL3, an IWAD file (see below)
Architecture: ppc-amigaos >= 4.1.0
Distribution: GPL v2
Kurzbeschreibung: Woof!, Doom-Sourceport auf MBF-Basis, portiert auf AmigaOS 4.1

DESCRIPTION

Woof! is a Doom source port based on MBF ("Marine's Best Friend"), which
is widely regarded as the successor of TeamTNT's Boom. It aims to bring
MBF to modern systems with quality-of-life enhancements, bug fixes and
compatibility improvements, while still looking and feeling very close to
the original. It supports many modern modding features such as
DEHEXTRA/DSDHacked, UMAPINFO, MBF21 and UDMF maps.

This is a native AmigaOS 4.1 PPC port of Woof! 16.0.0, using the
AmigaOS4 port of SDL3 for graphics and input, and OpenAL Soft on top of
AHI for sound. Rendering is done in software, so no 3D driver is needed.

The archive contains two programs:

- Woof - the game itself
- Woof-Setup - a launcher for multiplayer (network) games

INSTALLATION

1. Copy the whole Woof drawer to wherever you like.
2. Put your IWAD file(s) into the "iwads" drawer (or directly into the
   Woof drawer).
3. Double-click the Woof icon, or start it from Shell.

Woof.pk3 must stay next to the Woof executable - the game will not
start without it.

REQUIREMENTS

- AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition
- AHI for sound
- An IWAD file: doom.wad, doom2.wad, plutonia.wad, tnt.wad (commercial,
not included), or the free Freedoom IWADs (freedoom1.wad,
  freedoom2.wad) from https://freedoom.github.io
- Some free memory: when a level is loaded, about 120 MB are reserved
for level data in one go.

Additional IWAD/PWAD locations can be given with the environment
variables DOOMWADDIR or DOOMWADPATH (several drawers separated by ";"),
e.g.:
  SetEnv SAVE DOOMWADPATH "Work:Doom/iwads;Work:Doom/pwads"

USAGE

Some useful command line options ("Woof -help" shows the complete
list):

Woof -window start in a window
Woof -iwad doom.wad choose an IWAD
Woof -file mymod.wad load a PWAD
  Woof -warp 1 1 -skill 4 start E1M1 on Ultra-Violence

Alt+Enter switches between window and full screen. Mods placed in the
"autoload" drawer are loaded automatically.

MULTIPLAYER (Woof-Setup)

Woof-Setup is the network game launcher known from Chocolate Doom. With
it you can start a server or join a game (LAN or Internet server list),
choose game type, skill, level and additional WADs. The file requester
for adding WADs is the normal ASL requester. Woof-Setup then starts Woof
with the chosen settings.

Network games can also be started directly from Shell:

Woof -server on the machine hosting the game
Woof -connect 192.168.x.x on the other machines

SAVED GAMES AND SETTINGS

Everything stays inside the Woof drawer. The configuration (woof.cfg),
saved games and screenshots are stored in the "userdata" drawer next to
the executable. Nothing is written to ENVARC: or anywhere else on your
system.

OpenAL Soft looks for its configuration file under ETC: and USR:. If
these assigns don't exist on your system, Woof creates them temporarily
(pointing to RAM:) to avoid "Please insert volume" requesters, and
removes them again on exit. Existing assigns are never touched.

SOUND AND MUSIC

- Sound effects via OpenAL Soft on AHI, including Woof's 3D sound
  options.
- MIDI/MUS music is played with the built-in OPL (AdLib/SoundBlaster)
  emulation.
- Music and sound effects in MP3, OGG, FLAC, Opus and WAV format (used
by many modern mods) are supported via libsndfile.
- Not available in this port: native MIDI output, FluidSynth/SoundFont
music, tracker (MOD/XM/IT) music and PC speaker sound emulation.

LOGGING

Neither program opens a Shell/Workbench console window. All log output
is written to stdout.txt (Woof) and stdout_setup.txt (Woof-Setup) next
to the executables. If something doesn't work as expected, please check
these files first before reporting an issue.

To switch the log files off, use:
  SetEnv SAVE WOOF_NOLOG 1

KNOWN ISSUES

- Under QEMU the full screen mode may stay black (the game keeps running
and can be heard). Use "Woof -window" there and switch to full screen
with Alt+Enter if needed. On real hardware full screen works normally.
- If the display looks wrong, try another SDL renderer, e.g.:
  SetEnv SDL_RENDER_DRIVER software
- Woof-Setup uses a lot of CPU time while its window is open. This
  doesn't affect the game itself.
- "Failed to register with master server" when hosting a game is
harmless - the game works, it just doesn't appear in the public
server list. Switch off "Register with master server" in Woof-Setup
  if you don't need it.

CHANGES IN THIS PORT (compared to upstream Woof!)

- Single static executables, no shared objects needed
- Graphics and input via the AmigaOS4 port of SDL3 (statically linked)
- Full screen mode is set after the window and renderer have been
created (the AmigaOS4 SDL3 port opens full screen windows delayed)
- Sound via OpenAL Soft 1.18.2 (AmigaOS4 port by salass00) on AHI, with
all OpenAL calls serialized to avoid rare lock-ups when music and
sound effects were played at the same time
- libsndfile 1.2.2 with FLAC, Ogg/Vorbis, Opus and MP3 support
- Native AmigaDOS path handling: program drawer via PROGDIR:, all user
data in the "userdata" drawer, working directory restored on exit
- Big-endian fixes for the MD5 and SHA1 checksum code
- Memory management adapted (AmigaOS has no mmap)
- Temporary ETC:/USR: assigns for OpenAL Soft (only if missing)
- Woof-Setup: game start via AmigaDOS SystemTags(), ASL file requester
- Workbench start supported
- No console window on startup; logging redirected to stdout.txt
- AmigaOS $VER: tag for the "Version" command, $STACK cookie
