StarDict is a Cross-Platform and international dictionary written in Gtk2. It has powerful features such as "Glob-style pattern matching", "Scan selection word", "Fuzzy query" etc. Stardict Version 3.0.0 has developed a lot of new functions, such as Full-text translation, Net Dict. Homepage: http://stardict.sourceforge.net New in this release ------------------- * The program was linked with GTK+ 2.24.32. As a result, among other things, drag 'n drop now works. Content can now be moved with the mouse and much more. * The "StarDict-Editor" program from the "stardict-tools" package is now included. This allows catalogs to be changed and your own to be created. * The included Aspell catalogs in German and English for the spell check have been updated. * The program no longer uses the old "threads.library" but the current variant "pthreads.library". This makes the program much more stable. Features -------- * Translation of words into an other language. * Explains words using special encyclopaedia. * Shows similar words. * Links itself to every GTK2 application. Because of this, StarDict is an ideal supplementation to AbiWord and other text programs. * The entered word can be sent to a user defined internet page (Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, etc.) * Included dictionaries (AmiCygnix package): - German -> English (Freedict) - English -> German (Freedict) How to install new dictionaries ------------------------------- New dictionaries were available here: -> http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=80679 or -> http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries.php To install them, simply unpack the archive and copy it to Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/share/stardict/dic After a relaunch of StarDict, the dictionary is recognized automatically. Hints ----- * When an internet page should be displayed, StarDict looks for the environ- ment variable "Cygnix/STARDICT_BROWSER" or if this is not available for "Cygnix/BROWSER". The program path (in Unix format) in one of these vars is used to launch the desired browser. Example: "/Cygnix/CygnixPPC/bin/nsgtk" launches the browser "NetSurf", which is included in the AmiCygnix tools package. * With the spell plugin StarDict also scans installed spell dictionaries in aspell, ispell or myspell format. If StarDict can't find an entry that fits to the entered word in one of the installed StarDict dictionaries, it shows alternatives using the spell dictionaries. Dictionaries in aspell format created for AbiWord are available on http://www.os4depot.net. You can use these dicts also for StarDict. Problems -------- * Due to copyright problems, all dictionaries have been removed from the usual download sites. Of course, this significantly reduces the value of this program. With the included editor, however, you can now create your own dictionaries. * Translating entire blocks of text via Google, AltaVista and Yahoo no longer works at the time of publication. This is not a porting error, it is related to the way in which StarDict extracts the result from the corresponding page. Installation ------------ The X11 environment AmiCygnix version 1.6 (or higher) must be installed before! AmiCygnix is available on OS4-depot (http://os4depot.net). To install the package, just click on the install icon. The data will be installed into the AmiCygnix package. Afterwards you can find the programs in "Cygnix:Software/Stardict-3.0.0". To launch the program doubleclick on "Start_Stardict_Desktop.bat" or "Start_Stardict_Standalone.bat". Hans Verkuil for his initial port of X11R6.3 to OS 3.x ... Michael Christoph (beta testing)
